Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Move of the Week: Sep 6th

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners have a very clear goal: to control and finish the fight as soon as possible, with no injuries. And how do you make your partner/opponent give up and tap out? The answer is: applying correctly a submission. And there are 2 big “groups” of submissions: the joint-locks and the chokeholds.

Today Professor Paulo Guillobel illustrates a choke from the mount. The move is a very basic, very simple, and very effective move. But before you practice, ALWAYS remember: SAFETY COMES FIRST. In our San Clemente Jiu-Jitsu School, we do not practice BJJ against our partner. We practice WITH our partner. And that’s why we have the Dojo Etiquette: to make sure that everyone in our school practices respect, friendship and safety.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a Martial Art that can’t be practice by itself. You NEED your partner to practice, train and improve your BJJ skills. So with that in mind, please, watch Guillobel’s instructional video and when you go back to the mat, share it with your partner. And as always, have fun!

Thank you for showing the details. After watching the world championship two years ago where Roger submitted 9 of his opponents with this exact technique I tried to use it more frequently in my training. Unfortunately, I was never as successful because I had a hard time getting my second hand in the right position. After you reviewed this fundamental technique again, and showed the weight shift as well as waiting for the opponent to move before sinking the cross hand, I have become much more proficient with this sequence. Thank you!
